Raw Mango Rice, Mavinakayi Chitranna, Mangai sadam or Mamidikaya Pulihora, is a South Indian green mango-flavoured rice. It is one of the quick and easy rice preparation. It is a simple preparation where pre-cooked rice is sauteed with cooked grated green mangoes, fresh ginger, green chillies, and peanut mixture tempered with lentils, mustard seeds, curry leaves, hing and dry red chillies.
Green mangoes are back in the season. You can find it in abundance in the market at the beginning of the summer season. During this time, raw mango rice or mangai sadam is prepared widely in many households in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamilnadu. This mango rice is often a part of the menu at the Ugadi festival. Ugadi is a Hindu festival celebrated in the south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, and the festival marks the beginning of a new Hindu calendar year.
Mango Rice is spicy, tangy and flavoursome and has a slight crunch from the peanuts and lentils. It comes together in just 15 minutes and is perfect for serving as a light lunch or packing for lunch boxes. Raw mango rice tastes good on its own; no side dish is required with this yummy tangy rice preparation, and you can serve it with pappadam.

Ingredients
  

  • 100 gm Raw Mango , grated
  • 3 cups Cooked Rice
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Chana Dal
  • 2 to 3 Dry red chilli
  • 3 tbsp Peanuts
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ½ tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 Green Chilli , finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Ginger , finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp Hing
  • 10 or 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt To taste

Instructions
 

  • Wash and peel off the skin of raw mango. Grate the mango, discard the seed and keep it aside.
  • Take a pan and pour oil into it. Add peanuts, fry them and keep them aside.
  • Add chana dal, urad dal, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and red chillies. Roast them until they change colour to golden brown and smell aromatic.
  • Add hing and curry leaves and stir it for a few seconds.
  • Add finely chopped green chillies, ginger, and grated raw mango to this. Stir it well.
  • Add salt and turmeric powder and mix everything well. Cook the grated mango for 10 -15 minutes or until it becomes soft and cooked completely.
  • To this mango mixture, add the cooked rice and give it all a quick mix. Mix it gently, and care not to break the grains of rice.
  • Serve the Raw Mango Rice hot with fried papads by the side.
